Emil de Shoelace: The Brave Knight of Oxnadia

Once, in a far away land there was a kingdom named Oxnardia. Everyone lived happily of course being the Golden Age of the kingdom nothing else could be expected. No one suspected the danger lurking in their mists. No one saw the evil Chocolate Thunder gaining power slowly from the strawberries in the fields. No one noticed except Borneman the Great the most powerful magician of all time. He knew that the key to the distruction of the Great Chocolate Thunder laid in the hands of Emil de Sheolace, once a former squire at High Oxnardia.

It was that time of the year again. Emil de Shoelace would have to return to Oxnardia for the Fall Festival the kingdom always has during that time of the year. King Galido himself declared it a day of celebration three years ago when he was in a drunken stupor. However, without anyone really knowing it, it was Queen Galido who really held the pants in that household and it was she who managed all the arrangements. Anyhow, Emil travels down from the kingdom of Davis to Oxnardia. He and Borneman the Great held each other in high esteem, for it was Borneman who had taught Emil great skills and Emil had been his most avid pupil. Before Emil reached the kingdom, a great shadow could bee seen to the north. The shadow had not been noticed by Emil before and most certainly would have not been for the reason that the shadow had not been there before until the sudden appearance of the evil Chocolate Thunder.

Emil arrived in Oxnardia late that afternoon. On his was to High Oxnardia he came across pretty girl, who had long light brown hair and beautiful brown eyes. Her name was Cristi of Nah. She had changed, Emil thought, but she was still as beautiful as ever. To his mishap, she was the one and only girl who had broken his heart a year ago. Cristi did not seem to recognize him and kept walking towards the High Oxnardia Square. Emil reached Borneman’s Chamber, and opened the door. Suddenly, a hand reached out from the shadows, pulled him in, and slammed the door with a Bang! It took a minute for Emil’s eyes to adjust to the darkness and what he saw left him speechless.

There in front of him stood a looking glass that covered half the front wall. In that glass he was the evil Chocolate Thunder scurrying about towards the mountains in the north after her had gathered sufficient strawberries for the day. Chocolate Thunder laughed, a dry, raspy laugh that sent shivers down Emil’s spine. Between mouthfuls, the Great Chocolate Thunder said, “I shall kill King Galido and all of his men, thus, I can take hold of Oxnardia and have all the strawberries I want.” Again, his wicked laugh was heard and Emil, with his hands fisted, in a rolling heat of fury yelled, “It cannot happen! All the people shall suffer if he has his way!”

Borneman turned around and faced Emil. Placing his hands on the young man’s shoulders he said, “ There is only one who can stop his. It is his destiny to do so. He was chosen since the beginning of time and it was written in the stars long ago that is shall be done. You must go Emil and pray for guidance on what your next step must be. That I do no know; however, I can give you this sword ‘The Sting’ hat once belonged to the mighty Jacket of Yellow. With this your odds of defeating the Chocolate Thunder are greatly increased.”

Emil traveled to the holy shrine, the Hymnasium, where he prayed for three hours. Just when all hope was almost gone, a drop of water fell on his head. With a great start, Emil rose up and ran out of the Hymnasium and into the sunlight. He knew what he must do and set about it quickly. First, he gathered all the possible blacksmiths of the time. Blacksmith Myring, was the head of the smithies and designed the plans for Emil. For three whole days the men worked, only to stop to relieve themselves or to take a small bite of food. Finally on the fourth day, the great invention was finished, connected to the water supplies of the town, and ready to be set off by the blacksmith after being given the signal by Emil.

Waiting all day for evil Thunder to appear, Emil sat by a long near the Eucalyptus trees. He never arrived that day, or the next, not even the following week to be more precise. Emil decided to travel up the mountainside in search of the Chocolate Thunder and capture him before he escaped. Emil rode up the mountainside and continued on until he found a cave. There he entered and was greatly surprised with what he saw. A lovely temptress was standing by a bubbling hot stream brushing her long black hair. She had lovely almond shaped eyes, the color of jade, lips that were full and rosy, and high cheekbones to compliment her face. Emil had never seen such a beautiful woman in all his life. She looked up and was startled by his presence. She stood up and walked towards him. None of them said a word as they stood face to face. On instinct, Emil bent down to kiss the lovely maiden when suddenly she transformed into the evil Chocolate Thunder!

Emil jerked back in time to avoid the blow that was directed at him. He stumbled however, and just with enough time was able to dodge a blow to his head by a battle-axe that would have surely split his skull open. Regaining his balance, he ran out of the cave towards the strawberry fields. Just as he approached the center, he turned and faced his opponent. “There is no turning back now,” he said to himself and prepared for combat. Chocolate Thunder stops and takes out his sword. Metal and metal clash and the duel begin. Chocolate Thunder moves to the right then to the left, barely dodging “the Stinger.” Chocolate Thunder had experience, but Emil had agility. Using that agility, Emil feigns a right and quickly thrusts his sword to the left. Chocolate Thunder expecting an attack from his right moves to his left and is pierced by Emil’s sword.

Thinking it was finally over, Emil begins to walk away not realizing that Chocolate Thunder was not quite dead yet. Chocolate Thunder grabs at the strawberries and begins eating them rapidly for they were giving him energy and the power to begin to heal. Emil, remembering “the Sting” turns around to retrieve it and finds Chocolate Thunder eating voraciously. At that moment he whistles. The blacksmith waiting for that cue dislodges the hook and all the water traveled down various tubes into the strawberry fields, flooding them completely. No decent strawberry was left for Chocolate Thunder to eat. With a horrible scream, Chocolate Thunder falls over and dies. Suddenly a bright light is seen where the sword and Chocolate Thunder had been. A suddenly as it had come, the light was gone and with it the sword and the remains of Chocolate Thunder.

That night, there was not a serf or noble that was not present at the Fall Festival. Everyone wanted a glimpse of the brave young man who had saved all their lives, especially the king’s. There were a lot of people dancing and enjoying themselves until the king called a halt on the music. He stepped up into the dais and said, “ Will Emil de Shoelace step forward.” Emil stepped out of the shadows and walked directly in front of King Galido. The king brought up his sword and commanded Emil to kneel. Once kneeled, King Galido said, “ I daub thee, Emil de Shoelace, Duke of Oxnardia. Now rise.” The crowd’s cheers rose into a crescendo until the very walls shock. All were happy with the night’s turn of events.

Borneman the Great approached the Duke and said, “Your grace, how are you faring?” to which Emil responded, “Quite well actually. If I’d have known this is what I would have been compensated with, then I would have taken care of this a long time ago.” Yet, Emil doubted his own words and he felt content with his new station in life, yet not completely. He was lacking something more meaningful in his life and he did not yet know what it was. The night continued on and then came time for everyone to go home.

As Emil walked home, he ran across Cristi of Nah. She seemed to be having trouble walking and could not take a step without moaning with pain. Emil approached her and said “Cristi, do you need any help? What happened?” I seem to have twisted an ankle while I danced,” she responded. “I cannot walk without it hurting.” Emil lifts her up into his arms and begins his path to her home. On their way, they begin a casual conversation. Finally, Emil asks her “ Why did you reject me so long ago when I offered for you? Was it because you never loved me?” Cristi looks up and gazes into his eyes as she responded, “ I always loved you, But my stepmother would never let me marry you because she though you were not good enough. If you will still have me, there should be no objection to why we could not marry.” With that said, Emil left her at her home and walked on contemplating what had happened those past two weeks. Not only had he found adventure and faced the hardest challenge of his life, but he had also found how rewarding it was to do the right thing, but he had found the highest and most purist of all rewards, love.
